The richness in life lies in memories we have forgotten.
Naznin Lalani is a Mumbai-based self-taught artist who quit her job as an Architect-Urban planner to embark on an artistic adventure. She has participated in several international exhibitions and showcased her art in group shows in Mumbai.
She likes to paint simple daily objects and finds solace in their humble existence. She believes that they're a bridge between our present and our past. Naznin prefers old household paraphernalia to their new and modern counterparts. In her own words "The more these objects are used by different generations and families, the more chapters are added to the story in the autobiography of each of these objects. Consciously or unknowingly, these small things which we have once used have still impacted our values and lifestyles even today."
The first thing to strike the viewers when they look at her paintings is the use of the "natural" combination of vibrant green and grounded brown. The common theme that runs through them comprises objects that we've seen in our childhood and are now a rare sight. They transport the viewer to an endearing and nostalgic stroll down memory lane. The play of light and shadows, use of space and incorporation of various textures and tones lend character to her paintings.
Multiple objects in one frame could become distracting, but Naznin's skilful selection and placement create harmony amongst them and weave a story in the viewer's mind. The warmth and opacity of her light-filled watercolours create a mellow yet enraptured visual. Art plays a valuable part in history by documenting a slice in time.
Naznin's paintings archive memories and will someday unfreeze time.
